I usually buy either a 36 or 38 waist size depending on the material. Will the XL size be too large for me if I'm at the smaller side of the XL waist size? If so would I be able to return and exchange for the Large size suspensory?

These have a comfortable fit with an elastic waistband. Our large is currently approx 34-36" with a stretch, our XL is 37-44". If the sizing of your choosing does not fit, send us an email regarding the situation and we will be happy to help (:
